An environment is a within-account partition of cash data: a book, scenario, or legal entity. It is not a separate account; one account still holds one client's books. All of your cash data lives inside an environment.

A projection can span more than one environment through its scope, which is how the mid-market group consolidates Mid-Market Group - Parent (Demo) with Mid-Market Group - Subsidiary (Demo).
